Sustainability Scholars: mentorship and funding for graduate students. Apply by January 25, 2016.

Sustainability Scholars

The Sustainability Scholars Program sponsors University of Alberta graduate students to work on applied research projects with the City of Edmonton and the University of Alberta. Successful applicants work with professional mentors, receive $5,000 stipends and complete 250 hour projects in the summer.

Applying for defined positions

Interested students may apply for up to two different positions (including an open position), but successful applicants may only work one position. Applications are due by Monday, January 25, 2016 at 11:59 p.m.

Instructions

Complete the online application for each project of interest (see list at bottom of page). Your application to each project must include the following:

Statement of Interest

  • Why you are interested in this opportunity.
  • Your career goals.
  • How your background, skills and experience may be relevant for this particular project. Include current training, previous work experience, quantitative or qualitative methodological training, and teaching assistant experience.
  • The Statement of Interest should be a maximum of 200 words, with 2.5 cm (1 inch) margins and 12 point font.

Resume

  • Maximum length of 3 pages.
  • If you need information on how to create a resume, please visit the U of A Career Centre.

References

  • Provide the names and contact information for two references. Your references may be work supervisors and/or professors with whom you have worked or taken a class.
  • References may be contacted as part of the selection process.

Eligibility

This program is open to current graduate students at the University of Alberta:

  • Applicants must be enrolled full-time or part-time in a University of Alberta graduate degree program for the duration of the Sustainability Scholars program.
  • Applicants must not graduate prior to the completion of the Sustainability Scholars program (August 15, 2016).
  • Students in any academic discipline are eligible to apply.
  • There are no GPA requirements, but potential candidates must not be on academic probation.
  • Students must be willing and available to participate in all required program activities between April and September, 2016.
  • Students must notify their supervisors that they are applying for this program.
  • Sustainability Scholars from previous years are ineligible to apply.

City of Edmonton positions University of Alberta positions

Fourteen positions will work under the guidance of City of Edmonton mentors to complete research and help achieve the long-term goals in the city’s sustainability plans, as outlined in The Way Ahead.

Four positions will work under the mentorship of University of Alberta staff on projects contributing to the goals and strategies in the University of Alberta’s draft Sustainability Plan (2016-2020).

Two open positions are available in which students are invited to propose a sustainability-related applied research project. Follow this link to read about the different application process for open positions.
